James Hunter has been a favorite of mine since I first heard People Gonna Talk years ago. He has a way of channeling the 50s and 60s R&B sound that feels completely authentic, never like a parody.

"Daptone’s commitment to analog recording shines through here—there’s a depth to the saxophone and a snap to the drums."

The title track "Nick Of Time" sets the tone immediately with its mid-tempo groove and Hunter's signature vocal rasp. What I love about this record is the production; it’s warm and immediate, sounding exactly like a band playing together in a room.

Daptone’s commitment to analog recording shines through here—there’s a depth to the saxophone and a snap to the drums that you just don't get with modern digital sessions. It’s a short, sweet record that demands to be played on vinyl.
